EAGLE BUTTE | Richard Zacher, 82, passed away Monday, Oct. 22, 2018, at the Avera Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, after a long battle with cancer.
Richard Pius Zacher was born March 9, 1936, in Eagle Butte to Frank J. and Mary L. (Ganje) Zacher. Dick learned the value of hard work growing up on the farm and these values rendered him an entrepreneur and Main Street businessman. Dick served in the U.S. Army for two years upon graduating from high school in 1955. Dick was married to Ophelia (Swan), mother of their children Karla and Bryan, for 22 years. Dick gave back to his community as mayor, serving several terms. Dick enjoyed volunteering for the All Saints Catholic Church doing yard work.
When Dick was not working, he enjoyed gardening, fishing, playing cards, listening to polka music, making homemade pickles and grilling steaks. His tasty soups will be missed by many.
Dick is survived by his children, Karla (Kasey) Abbott, Amber, Mary (Deitrich) Thompson and Will; and Bryan (Kim) Zacher and Shawn. He is also survived by his brothers, Phil (Carolie) Zacher, Jerome (Edwina) Zacher and Jack (Karen) Ganje. Surviving nieces and nephews are Maria (Dave) Kuharski, Denise Grubbs, Mike (Tracy) Zacher, Renee Zacher and JJ Zacher.
Dick was preceded in death by his father, Frank J. Zacher and his mother, Mary L. Zacher. Also preceding him in death were his brother, Robert Zacher and ex-wife, Ophelia Breisch.
Visitation begins at 6 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary service today at All Saints Catholic Church.
Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, at the church, with Father Bryan Sorenson presiding. Burial, with military honors, will follow at the Eagle Butte Cemetery.
