Bonnie Gene Wilkins Peller

SEATTLE - Funeral services were held for Bonnie Gene Peller June 29, 2002 in Crawfordsville, Indiana, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, with Father Melvin Bennett officiating.

Mrs. Peller passed away at Valley Medical Center, Seattle, Washington, on Sunday, June 23, after a very short illness.

Bonnie was the daughter of B. Leon Wilkins and Alyce Strong Wilkins. She was born August 28, 1928, in Provo, Utah. Moved to Lead, SD at age 3. Graduated from Lead High School class of 1946 and attended South Dakota State University.

She is survived by her husband, William Nicholas Peller. They were married in September 1948 in Lead. A son, Michael Leon Peller of Destin, Florida. A daughter, Kathleen Jensen, Indianapolis, Indiana. 4 grandchildren and one great-grandson, a sister, JoAnn Wilkins Deeble of Custer County, SD, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Henry G. Machart

CUSTER - Henry G. Machart, 70, Custer, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Machart, Custer; one son, Henry Machart Jr., Yakima, Wash.; two stepsons, Richard Walsh, Keystone, and David Walsh, Custer; one stepdaughter, Roberta Snell, Box Elder; one brother; three sisters; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy.

Services will be at a later date in Minnesota.

Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.

Henry G. Machart

CUSTER - Henry G. Machart, 70, Custer, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Machart, Custer; one son, Henry Machart Jr., Yakima, Wash.; two stepsons, Richard Walsh, Keystone, and David Walsh, Custer; one stepdaughter, Roberta Snell, Box Elder; one brother; three sisters; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Martha Reiter

CUSTER - Martha Reiter, 80, rural Custer, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at her home.

Survivors include her husband, Richard Reiter, Custer; two sons, Richard Reiter, Evansville, Ind., and Greg Reiter, Newark, Del.; two daughters, Karen Mangus, Virginia Beach, Va., and Joanne Bornong, Sheridan, Wyo.; one brother, Carl Sasse, Walker, Minn.; one sister, Elaine Burleigh, Gordon, Neb.; and six grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with McColley's Chapels of the Hills in Custer.

Herman C. Laue

CUSTER - Herman C. Laue, 70, Custer, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in St. Cloud, Minn.

Survivors include one brother, Richard Laue, Custer.

Arrangements are pending with McColley's Chapels of the Hills in Custer.

Samuel L. Pitts

NEW UNDERWOOD - Samuel L. Pitts, 41, New Underwood, died Sunday, July 14, 2002, at Curlew Lake near New Underwood.

Survivors include four children, Tyia Pitts, Deisirae Pitts, Anashia Pitts and Samuel Pitts, all of New Underwood; his mother, Joan Denton, Farwell, Mich.; his father, Wayne Pitts, Washington; two brothers, Steve Pitts and Mick Pitts, both of Farwell; and one sister, Michelle Sulivan, Farwell.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 19, at Behrens Mortuary in Rapid City, with Chaplain Chris LaPack officiating.

Jarred W. Red Cloud

WOUNDED KNEE - Jarred W. Red Cloud, 14, Wounded Knee, died Sunday, July 14, 2002, in Pine Ridge.

Survivors include his parents, Karen Boltz, Wounded Knee, and Manuel Red Cloud, Pine Ridge; three brothers, Merle Boltz, Wounded Knee, Michael Cuny, Manderson, and Case Red Cloud, Pine Ridge; one sister, Brittany Clifford, Manderson; his maternal grandparents, Mark and Lillian Fire Thunder, Lincoln, Neb.; and his paternal grandfather, Pedro Red Cloud, Pine Ridge.

One-night wake begins at 3 p.m. Friday, July 19, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wounded Knee.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 20, at the church, with the Rev. Jim Ryan officiating.

Burial will be at Messiah Episcopal Cemetery in Wounded Knee.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Richard J. Coupe

RAPID CITY - CMSGT (Ret) Richard J. Coupe, 65, Rapid City, died at Rapid City Regional Hospital on Monday, July 15, 2002.

Richard was born September 22, 1936, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, to Robert and Constance (Akstin) Coupe. He graduated from Pawtucket High School, then joined the U.S. Air Force. He retired after 30 years of active duty and served an additional 15 years as a civil service Fitness and Recreation Manager.

CMSGT Coupe's awards and decorations include: the Silver Star for bravery in action, the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct Medal with 6 Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 6 Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Longevity Award with 6 Oak Leaf Clusters, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and Small Arms Marksmanship ribbon.

CMSGT Coupe was a member of Elks Lodge 1187, Veterans of Foreign Wars, The Retired Enlisted Association and the Caribou Association.

Survivors include his wife, Paula of Rapid City; his mother, Constance Coupe of Montana; two sons, Richard J. Coupe and Jim Coupe, and two daughters, Debbie Coupe and Donna Coupe, all of California. He was preceded in death by his father.

Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 19, at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home, with Rev. Pat McCorkell, S.J. officiating. Interment will be in the Black Hills National Cemetery, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 of Rapid City. A memorial has been established.

Henry Wilson Oliver

BELLE FOURCHE - Henry Wilson Oliver, 86, Belle Fourche and formerly of Glendive, Mont., died Saturday, July 13, 2002, at Belle Fourche Long Term Health Care Center.

Survivors include three sons, Dennis Oliver, Whitefish, Mont., Darrell Oliver, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Norman Oliver, El Cajon, Calif.; four daughters, Marella Worth, St. Louis, Mary Lloyd, Helena, Mont., Yvonne Olmstead, Glendive, and Roberta McCartney, Sheridan, Wyo.; one brother, Albert Oliver, Rapid City; 21 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, July 19, and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday, July 20, at Kline-Frost Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral chapel, with the Rev. Rick Brennan officiating.

Burial will follow at Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Fourche.

Dr. Edgar Colin Smart

CHANDLER, Ariz. - Dr. Edgar Colin Smart, 71, of Chandler, AZ, passed away Friday, July 12, 2002, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Dr. Smart was a well known physician in the East Valley. He was born May 31, 1931 in Oldhill, Staffordshire, England, and graduated from the University of London, England, in 1956. He completed his Externship at West Minister and Gordon Hospital, London, where he was an assistant to Sir Stanford Kaid, the physician and surgeon to the Royal Family. In 1957-60, he joined the U.K. Army to do national service in the Royal Army Medical Corp where he was a Captain. That is where he met his wife, Celia, a nurse Lt. in the Queen Alexandria Royal Army Nursing Corp. They were married in Aldershot, Hampshire, in 1958. He was a surgeon in Aldershot, Rinteln, Germany and Berlin, and in 1960, he passed the OB-GYN boards in the United Kingdom. For the next seven years, Dr. Smart joined the medical practice in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, until emigrating to the United States to Tioga, North Dakota, in October of 1967. In Tioga, Dr. Smart was in private practice and did all types of surgery. He often flew an airplane to nearby towns to deliver babies and give anesthetics for other doctors. He owned and operated a six and a half thousand acre ranch in White Earth, North Dakota. In 1973, the Smart family moved to Belle Fourche, South Dakota, where he owned his own practice and specialized in surgery and OB/GYN. Dr. Smart moved his family in 1979 to Chandler, Arizona. He joined Drs. Eicher and Garbayo until 1987. He then moved his practice to Sun Lakes, where his wife, Celia, worked alongside him as his nurse and office manager until he sold the practice in 1992. He was the Medical Director at FHP until it dissolved and joined Maricopa Health Plans in 1999 until the present as their Medical Director. Dr. Smart was president of the Chandler Chamber of Commerce twice, Man of the Year in 1985, and a member of the Chandler Regional Hospital Board of Directors since 1982. He and Celia have four children and three grandsons all residing in the East Valley: Nicholas and Pattie Smart; Julia and Tolm Marreel, Helen Smart, James and Amy Smart, and grandsons, Andrew and Michael Marreel and Wilson Smart. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Jennifer. Friends called from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 14, at Bueler Mortuary, 14 W. Hulet Dr., Chandler. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to East Valley Regional Cancer Center, 1875 W. Frye Rd., Chandler, AZ 85224.

Ted D. Ricketts

BELLE FOURCHE - Ted D. Ricketts, 44, Belle Fourche, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at his home.

Survivors include his parents, Ted and Sonia Ricketts, Belle Fourche, and one brother, Trevor Ricketts, Sandstone, Minn.

Arrangements are pending with Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche.

Florence M. Madison

HOT SPRINGS - Florence M. Madison, 76, Hot Springs, died Tuesday, July 16, 2002, at Fall River Hospital in Hot Springs.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. Leslie Madison, Hot Springs; two daughters, Joanne Burkett, Blum, Texas, and Ruth Burkett, Hillsboro, Texas; three sisters, Althea Auspurger, Miller, Helen Wilbourne, Corona, Calif., and Kathy Jacobson, Blaine, Minn.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, July 19, at McColley's Chapels of the Hills in Hot Springs.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 20, at Calvary Baptist Church in Hot Springs, with the Rev. Matt Limm officiating.

Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Hot Springs.
