Noem should oppose nuclear waste bill
I am writing to ask Rep. Noem to vote against HR 3053, the Nuclear Waste Policy Amendments of 2017. A vote for HR 3053 is a vote for high-level radioactive waste shipments through our state and the states of friends and families.
Each cask has as much radioactive Cesium as was released by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear power reactor meltdown that devastated huge swaths of several countries and is still measurable in fields on the other side of the continent. The casks are not real-world tested nor designed for real-world conditions despite claims to the contrary. The transport threatens our district, our state and the whole country as thousands of these shipments that will occur on our roads, rails and waterways, bringing us no closer to permanent isolation or improved storage of the growing nuclear waste problem. Yucca Mountain can’t isolate the waste and supposedly interim sites are a distraction as they just add to the problems we already have and violate environmental justice targeting largely low-income communities filled with people of color.
As your constituent, I call upon Rep. Noem to do the right thing and oppose this monstrosity of a bill.
