Contractor loves chore of restoring skyline icon - Article
Five-year-old Ashton Cowan and his 3-year-old sister, Alexis, were anxious to scramble up the steps of Dinosaur Park Tuesday afternoon to complete Ashton’s birthday celebration in style.
But their mom, Jessica, had to stop for a moment to collect the sight of the long-necked concrete dinosaur looming above the parking lot along Skyline Drive.
“Oh, my gosh, I haven’t been here in so long,” she said, her eyes shining like her children’s. “My dad took me here a lot when I was a little girl.”
That “I remember when” moment is repeated thousands of times each year by people from across South Dakota and other states. The big dinosaur does that to people. Lots of people.
And on Tuesday, Jessica Cowan and her children came over from their home in Spearfish to renew an old family tradition by trudging up the steps to visit the concrete dinosaur crew.
One in particular.
It didn’t matter to them a bit that the biggest dinosaur of the bunch – a towering Apatosaurus replica – was in the second day of a noisy, dusty facelift in fairly gusty winds.
It mattered a lot, however, to Dave Jasper and his crew from DJ Painting & Universal Crystal and Art Restoration in Rapid City. They are working under a city contract to repair the broken head on the dinosaur, sand blast away layers of old paint, fill in cracks and pock marks and get the big creature primed and painted.
Within reason, of course.
There are limits to what they can and should do, Jasper said, in restoring a rough-finished piece of the past that has dominated the Rapid City skyline since the mid-1930s.
The creatures up there are supposed to be ancient, after all.
