Spearfish Fly Fishing

Spearfish Creek Fly Shop, a full service fly fishing shop that offers a complete stock of fly rods, fishing equipment, and over 3,000 different flies for catching trout, opened on April 1st in Spearfish. The shop is owned by long-time Pierre pharmacist Jim Stephens and the co-owner Justin Stephens of Spearfish. The store is located next to their outdoor clothing and gear store, High Mountain Outfitters, and is located just next to the Stadium Grill on Main Street in Spearfish.

The fly shop offers complete guided fishing trips and has 4 very qualified guides on staff. Fishing clients that do not have their own equipment and waders have available to them, free of charge, waders, fly rods, and reels.

In quoting Jim Stephens, “Both stores have been extremely well received by the outdoor community, as well as the fly fishing community. In Spearfish, there is a large number of fly fishing anglers, both men and ladies, who truly enjoy fly fishing and its challenges.” Fly fishing anglers are ecstatic that Spearfish now has their own fly shop, and no longer will they need to travel to purchase fly fishing supplies.

This past Saturday, the staff at the fly shop volunteered at the D.C. Booth Fish Hatchery with their open house, and instructed 52 young people and some adults in the art of fly casting. Fly fishing as a sport is known as the quiet sport, and is known as a very relaxing and rewarding type of fishing. Also it is a sport of continual learning, as new fly fishers learn about various insect species, the physics of fishing moving water such as Spearfish Creek, how to practice catch and release fishing, and respect for the environment.

Both stores are members of something new to South Dakota: 1% for the Planet. The members of this organization voluntarily give 1% of their sales to environmental and conservation non-profits of their choice. This organization was started by Yvon Chouinard, owner of Patagonia Outdoor Clothing and Gear, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies in West Yellowstone, Montana. Over the past ten years 1% for the Planet has raised over $150 million dollars, all of which was spent on conservation. Both Chouinard and Mathews will be coming to Spearfish in early July to put on a one day instructional fly fishing school, in conjunction with Spearfish Creek Fly Shop.

Spearfish Creek Fly Shop is interested in working with land owners to create a series of trophy fisheries in stock ponds in the Belle Fourche and Spearfish areas. The fly shop will purchase the trout from Wayne Lindstadt, and stock the dams free of charge. The trout provided by Lindstadt Trout farm grow an inch a month for the first year, so in 12 months, the fish are over 13 inches and very healthy. Ideally, as stock dam would maintain about 14 feet of water in the summer, and never have been previously stocked. Ranch families can enjoy great trout fishing, and the fly shop will pay the rancher a rod fee of $25 each time they bring a client to fish. In 12 months, the stocked ponds will have catchable fish population, and in three years, the fish will approached 5 pounds, which definitely is a trophy rainbow trout.

If interested in having a pond stocked on your ranch, please call Jim Stephens at 605-222-2988. We are very conscious of care of ranch roads, would not fish if the roads or trails are wet, and absolutely leave no trace of fishing on the property. Fishing the ponds we stock would not be an everyday thing; probably once or twice a week.
