The Post 22 Expos went into Friday night’s Class A Junior Legion consolation matchup with the Brookings Chutes looking to bounce back from a tough loss in Thursday night’s second round matchup.
Behind a strong offense and a solid pitching performance, the Expos picked up a 9-0 shutout win over Brookings at Watertown Stadium Field.
Post 22 scored a majority of its runs in the first and second innings, starting with three quick runs to start the game.
Matthew Hegre kicked off the scoring for the Expos, crossing home on an error, followed by an RBI triple from Alexander Knudtson and an RBI single from Jack Sorenson.
The Expos continued to score in the second inning, this time adding five more runs to its early lead. Hegre opened the second inning with an RBI single, followed by a two RBI double from Knudtson and an RBI groundout from Sorenson.
The Expos added an insurance run in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Zach Sumption had an excellent day on the mound for the Expos, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out three batters in seven innings.
Knudtson led the way offensively for the Expos with three RBIs and two hits. Sorenson chipped in with two RBIs on one hit while Hegre, Sumption and Alex Weaver finished with one RBI apiece.
The Expos (38-13) will play Post 320 for the second time in the tournament today at 6 p.m.
Watertown outlasts Shooters in semifinal
Watertown advanced to the Class A Junior Legion State semifinal game with close 9-8 win over the Post 320 Shooters on Friday night.
The Shooters opened the game with a one run lead, but fell behind early as Watertown scored a pair of runs to close out the first inning.
Watertown extended its lead with five more runs in the fifth, but the Shooters answered with four more runs in the fourth.
After a two run fifth inning gave Watertown a 9-5 lead heading into the seventh the Shooters scored a trio of runs to get within striking distance.
Watertown was able to hold off the late game surge on its way to clinching the win.
Keegan Kast and Renn Svenson led the Shooters (28-17) with one hit and two RBIs apiece while Jamin Wurtz finished with three hits and one RBI.
Webster takes narrow win over Spearfish
The Webster Post 40 American Legion baseball team scored a win in the opening round of the South Dakota Class B American Legion baseball tournament, edging Spearfish Post 164 3-1 in Webster on Friday.
Spearfish scored its only run of the game in the top half of the sixth as Tyrell Rosencranz scored on a Jaxon Rosencranz double to right field.
Down a run, Webster scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the win.
Chandler Day led Webster with two hits and two RBIs while Jaxon Rosencranz finished with one hit and one RBI.
Milbank drops Winner/Colome
Milbank Post 9 took an early lead and didn’t look back on its way to scoring a 6-2 win over Winner/Colome Post 169 in the opening round of the South Dakota Class B Legion baseball tournament in Webster on Friday afternoon.
After a scoreless first inning for both teams, Milbank took an early lead with one run in the top half of the second inning.
Milbank added to its lead with three more runs in the third, before adding another in the fourth to take a 5-0 advantage.
Winner/Colome cut the deficit with two runs in the sixth, but Milbank added another run in the ninth to seal the win.
Tristan Hall led Milbank with three hits and two RBIs while Levi McClanahan paced Winner/Colome with one hit and one RBI.
