Samantha Nichols of Rapid City bagged a pair of mourning doves near Fairburn, south of Rapid City on Sept. 5.

Nichols, originally of Rush City, Minn., had done some trap shooting before, but was on her first-ever hunting trip after taking the South Dakota Game, Fish & Park's Hunting 101 course.

"For not having hunted anything before, I was pretty much amazed that I was able to drop one," she said.

Mourning doves were a good choice for a first-time hunter, she said.

"There wasn't the cute factor that a deer would have been," she said.

Another factor in the hunt: Nichols is eight months pregnant with her second child. She received her doctor's approval to go out that day.

"He just told me to practice good gun safety, which I would have done anyway," she said.
