The Rapid City Post 22 American Legion baseball team had two complete-game efforts on the mound on its way to picking up a pair of wins on the second day of the Jim Hanus Gopher Classic Baseball Tournament in Minneapolis on Saturday.
The Hardhats opened the day with a narrow 5-3 win over Green Bay, Wis., before dropping Minneapolis Southwest 8-2 in an early afternoon affair.
Int the first game, Post 22 got on the board first, taking a one-run lead at the end of the first inning as Sam Haug scored on a Drake Messinger ground out to second base. Green Bay took its first lead of the game a short time later on a pair of runs in the top half of the second inning.
Although the Hardhats tied the game at two runs apiece in the bottom of the second inning, Green Bay regained the lead again in the fifth.
In the bottom half of the fifth inning, Post 22 took the lead back for good as Haug scored on an error and Messinger and Matt Vickers scored on a Timmy Paris single to left field.
Brandon Soucy picked up the win for the Hardhats, giving up three runs on eight hits while striking out four batters in seven innings.
Paris led the Hardhats with two RBIs on one hit, while Messinger and Vickers chipped in with one hit and one run apiece.
The Hardhats found themselves behind early in the second game of the day, as Minneapolis Southwest opened the contest with a pair of runs.
Down two runs, the Hardhats cut the lead on a Zach Solano solo home run to center field. Cooper Bowman gave Post 22 its first lead on a double to left field that scored Erik Petry and Riley McSherry. Bowman reached home a short time later on a Carter Deming single to left.
The Hardhats added to their lead in the fourth as Solano blasted a two RBI home run to left and Tommy Wahl and Holden Jackson scored on a Bowman double.
In what was only his third start on the mound this season for Post 22, George Eccarius held Southwest to just two runs on four hits while striking out four in seven innings. Eccarius gave up just one hit after the first inning.
Solano led the way for the Hardhats with four hits and three RBIs, while Bowman finished with four RBIs on two hits.
The Hardhats (37-9) will continue tournament play when they take on Rosemount, Minn., today at 8:30 a.m. in the final round-robin contest. Post 22 is currently 4-0 in its pool. each pool winner will advance to the field of 16 teams in bracket play on Monday, with the final four teams scheduled for Tuesday's action.
