The St. Thomas More volleyball team got a tough battle from Pine Ridge in the second set, but still got by the Lady Thorpes in three sets Thursday night at the STM Gym.

The Cavaliers opened with a 25-7 win in the first set, before stopping Pine Ridge 25-23 and 25-15.

Amelya Robinson led the way for STM with 26 assists and four aces, while Skylar Sullivan had seven aces and eight digs. Offensively, Ciara Benson had 12 kills and Alex Kandolin added 11. Grace Brechtel and Haleigh Timmer both had two blocks.

No other information for Pine Ridge was made available.

STM, 21-5, will be at Lead-Deadwood Thursday, while Pine Ridge, 6-4, will be at the Lakota Nation Invitational today and Saturday in Rapid City.

STURGIS 3, DOUGLAS 0: The Scoopers and Patriots battled to three extra-point sets Thursday night in Sturgis.

It was as close as a three-set match could be, with the Scoopers winning 26-24, 31-29 and 27-25.

No other information was made available.

Sturgis, 7-12, is at Spearfish Tuesday, while Douglas, 4-13, is at Rapid City Central Tuesday.

SPEARFISH 2, ST. THOMAS MORE 1: The Spartans closed the regular season with a tough win over the Cavs Thursday at Dakota Fields.

The Spartans last loss was a 1-0 decision to STM on Aug. 21.

With the win, Spearfish closed at 10-2-2 and currently stands as the third seed for next week's Class AA playoffs. The Spartans will host a quarterfinals game on Tuesday.

The loss dropped the Cavaliers to 9-3-1 and St. Thomas More will still likely clinch a first-round bye in the Class A playoffs and will host a semifinal game on Oct. 6.

Scoopers win West River Challenge

Sturgis came away with the team title in the West River Challenge boys' golf tournament Thursday at Meadowbrook Golf Course.

The Scoopers finished with a 331 in the two-day 18-hole format, with Rapid City Central second at 344, the Rapid City Stevens junior varsity at 385 and Douglas at 490.

The first nine holes were played Tuesday at Boulder Canyon Country Club near Sturgis.

Matt Eby of Sturgis was the individual medalist with an 80, followed by Noah Ziegmann of Sturgis with an 83, Tice McVay of Sturgis with an 84, Alex Duran of Central at 85 and Jake Dansby of Central with an 86.
