Melissa Bloss, a native Michigander now living in Rapid City, bagged her first deer on Nov. 20.

Bloss was out with her older sister Sarah Von Eye and guide, South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks naturalist Keith Wintersteen, hunting south of Fruitdale along the Belle Fourche River.

"It was really foggy out, we could barely see anything in front of us," Bloss said. "Keith said if we can see a deer, it's in range and you can shoot it."

Bloss said she had one deer lined up in the crosshairs but got too nervous and didn't shoot.

Von Eye later spotted another deer on a hill. Bloss fired a standing shot using Wintersteen's shoulder as a support.

Bloss, 26, had the meat processed into jerky and venison roasts and plans to do a European mount of the head.

"It was really exciting. I can't wait to go again," she said.
