Amanda Konold of Rapid City knew the trout at Deerfield Lake would be on the feed because of her knowledge of the weather.

That knowledge helped her catch this 20-inch rainbow trout on Feb. 15.

“It was just random middle of the afternoon. It wasn’t morning bite or night bite. Being a meteorologist, I watch the fronts. I knew there was a front coming in, so I knew it would be pretty hot,” she said.

Konold used a pink glow jig and mealworms, fishing in about 25 feet of water.

“I know a lot of people go out there to catch perch, but we wanted to catch trout, that’s why we didn’t go as deep as everyone else was,” she said.

Konold turned the big rainbow loose after taking a quick photo.

“It was absolutely gorgeous. We didn’t have a scale with us so we couldn’t weigh it,” she said. “We caught a bunch of smaller ones and some brown trout, too.”
