A man in town for the Sturgis motorcycle rally is in custody after an elderly man was stabbed outside the Buffalo Chip Campground on Monday night, according to the Meade County Sheriff's Office.
A Belle Fourche man driving on Interstate 90 picked up a man in his 20s or 30s who was hitchhiking and agreed to drive him to the Buffalo Chip, according to Tom Wilts, chief deputy with the Meade County Sheriff's Office. As the vehicle approached the campground, the driver and hitchhiker got into an argument, and the hitchhiker stabbed the driver in the chest with a knife, Wilts said.
Wilts did not know what sort of knife the attacker had used. He did not think alcohol was a factor. Wilts said the driver was taken to Sturgis Regional Hospital and then to Rapid City Regional Hospital, where he remained a patient Tuesday night. The sheriff's office had a suspect in custody Tuesday. Wilts declined to name the suspect or the victim.
