Although Wyoming teams dominated, the four Northwest Nebraska teams and their athletes had some highlights at the Bayard CD Track and Field Meet on Thursday, April 2.
The Burns Broncs won both team championships, scoring 115 points in the boys’ race and 108 in the girls’ competition, just one more point than runner-up Southeast High at Yoder.
Another Wyoming school, Lingle-Fort Laramie, was third in the girls’ team race with 73 points, but Gordon-Rushville was fourth with 63 points to finish ahead of the remaining dozen schools, most of them from the Panhandle.
Gordon-Rushville’s Rarity Cournoyer won both the 800 and 1600 races and also anchored the 4x800 relays at the Bayard CD Meet last week.
Bridgeport was the runner-up among the boys’ teams with 94 points while Hemingford was third with 74. The Bobcats, Gordon-Rushville, Hay Springs and Crawford all had an event winner.
To make the story simpler, here’s a synopsis of each of the immediate area school’s bright spots:

The Gordon-Rushville Lady Mustangs were led by their distance corps. Junior Rarity Cournoyer was one of two double winners among the girls at the Bayard Meet. She won both the 800 and 1600 races by sizable margins and also anchored the winning 4x800 meter relay that included Brittney Dehning, Kynsleigh Krebs and Kylie Goings. Dehning also was third in both the 800 and 1600 and Krebs was third in the 3200. Those placings accounted for 48 of the team’s points.

Mustangs’ sophomore Braylon Holston won the boys’ triple jump and also was fourth in the discus. Senior Elijah Ross was third in the 800 and fifth in the 400 while soph Robert Moore was third in the 1600. Those races all had more than 20 contestants.
Sheridan County teams swept the 4x800 relays at Bayard when the Hay Springs boys won that event. The Hawks’ quartet was made up of seniors Parker Wellnitz and Mason Albrecht, sophomore Easton Mintken and freshman Arian Mata.
Wellnitz also was a close second in the 1600 and was fourth in the 3200.
Led by her third in the 200, Reece Varvel placed in all three of the sprints for the Hay Springs girls while Alaina Raymer earned points in both the 300 hurdles and triple jump.
Crawford had a pair of first-place finishes. Senior Taylor Homan won the boys’ 800 meters and freshman Leigh Holmgren was the triple jump winner. Senior Ty Crouse also earned six points for the Rams by coming in third in the boys’ 300 hurdles.
Hemingford junior Austin Benda won the 3200 meters while sophomore Jace Haas was the runner-up in both the 200 dash and the long jump. The Bobcats got another second in the high jump when senior Keirith Yale cleared 6-2. Freshman Fletcher Moseman showed promise by finishing fourth in the 1600.
