The Chadron girls and the Hemingford boys repeated as the team winners by significant margins at the chilly Chadron Twilight Track and Field Meet on Friday. April 25. The athletes braved the cool temperatures to compete and numerous fans were in attendance to cheer them on.
Both first place teams won seven events and used their depth to add to their point totals. The Lady Cardinals tallied 163 points while Hemingford was the runner-up with 85, followed by Hay Springs with 78. The Hemingford boys scored 175 points, followed by Chadron with 106 points and Gordon-Rushville with 96. Hay Springs was competitive with 76 points.
One of the highlights saw Chadron freshman Addisyn Gruver claim the long jump record by going 17-6 ¾ to break the old mark of 17-2 ½ set by Gordon all-star Shannon Kling as a junior 30 years ago in 1995. It was just the third conference record set so far this decade.

Chadron High freshman Addisyn Gruver long jumped 17 feet, 6 ¾ inches to set the record at the Cardinals’ Twilight Meet last week. It broke the record set by Gordon’s Shannon Kling of 17-2 ½ in 1995.
The long jump also was one of Kling’s four firsts at the Twilight Meet the following year, when she went 16-6 ½, but about a month later leaped 18-11 ½ to win the State Meet’s all-class championship by 3 ½ inches. That mark remains Northwest Nebraska’s all-time long jump best.
Gruver also won the 300 hurdles and anchored Chadron’s winning 4x100 relay at the Twilight Meet. Her relay teammates were Jezy Alcorn, Rylan Barry and Brooklynn Hoffman.
The Lady Cardinals’ other blue ribbon winners were Beau Behrends, 800; Hoffman, high hurdles; and Sophie Watson, high jump.
Hay Springs sophomore Reese Varvel was a triple winner, claiming first in all three of the girls’ sprints. Hawks’ freshman Megan Anderson also won the triple jump and was the runner-up to Gruver in the long jump.
The Hemingford girls won three firsts. Freshman Ainslee Woltman won the 1600, senior Kyra Jespersen the discus and the LadyCats also took the 4x400 relay. Cody-Kilgore freshman Aubryanna Schmit won the shot put and Gordon-Rushville senior Rylie Baker was first in the 3200.
Three boys were double winners. Hemingford freshman Jayce Haas claimed both the 200 and 400 meters, Hay Springs senior Dylan Raymer slammed the hurdles and Hemingford senior Michael Helmick won both the shot put and the discus by large margins.
Chadron senior Quinn Bailey won the 100 meters and led off the winning 4x100 relay team that also included Trae Owsley, Layne Davidson and Marcus Dunbar, in that order. Dunbar also paced the Cardinals in a one-two-three sweep of the long jump.
After placing second in the 800 meters at the first five meets of the season, Chadron High junior Beau Behrends outran Hemingford’s Dakota Horstman and Aurora Hinman to win the event at the Cardinals’ Twilight Meet on Friday, April 25. Her time was 2:32.12. All six of her times have been within eight seconds of one another.
Hemingford’s winners besides Jayce Haas and Helmick were sophomore Austin Benda, 800; senior Boady Hunter, 1600; and high jumper Keirith Yale.
Hay Springs senior Parker Wellnitz repeated as the Twilight Meet’s 3200-meter winner. Gordon-Rushville freshman Braylon Holston won the triple jump and the Mustangs won both the 4x400 and 4x800 relays.
None of this year’s individual winners other than Wellnitz won the same event a year ago, but Chadron’s Sophie Watson won the high hurdles last year and placed second this year with a faster time.
