The good-size crowds who attended the Chadron State College rodeo this past weekend at the Dawes County Fairgrounds were greeted by favorable weather and lots of competition. The rodeo drew 474 entries while opening the 2026-27 season in the Central Rocky Mountain Region that covers Colorado, Wyoming and western Nebraska.
Shelby Derner, a Chadron State senior from New Underwood, S.D., and her palomino partner placed fifth among the 111 barrel racers at the Chadron State rodeo last weekend. Their time of 17.66 seconds was the second fastest in the long go-round and their total time of 35.44 was only 29 hundreds from the winning time.
Leighton Sander, a Chadron State sophomore from Custer, S.D., placed sixth in the bareback riding at the CSC rodeo weekend, scoring 68 and 69 points while riding a couple of Muddy Creek Rodeo broncs.
Chadron State senior Pepper Rhyne of Craig, Colo., and his gray gelding named Blue Moon were competitive in tie down roping at the CSC rodeo last weekend. They finished their first run in 11.5 seconds and had another fast time in the finals, but broke the barrier.
