The Rapid City Historic Preservation Commission and The Journey Museum invite the community to "Picture Our Past" on Sunday, November 8, 2026, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at The Journey Museum, 222 New York Street, Rapid City. The public is invited to bring three of their favorite historic photos* (50 years or older) featuring Rapid City’s built environment (buildings, homes, skyscapes, signs, etc.). These photographs will be scanned and returned immediately on site. The images that are collected will be shared with the public in an interactive online map and will also be added to The Journey Museum’s digital collections.
Rapid City’s history is not just found in archives – it lives in family photo albums, old snapshots and the memories of the people who call our community home. Bring your photos and the stories that go with them. These will be put into an interactive Story Map, which will connect historic images to the places they represent and allow the community to explore Rapid City’s history in a new way. Your photos can help tell the story of the places that shaped Rapid City.
*If you have more than three photos to share, please contact Jennifer Bergstrom at 605-394-4120 ext. 2339 to make special arrangements.
This event is hosted by the Rapid City Historic Preservation Commission and The Journey Museum.
This event is financed with federal funds from the National Park Service, Department of the Interior, through the South Dakota Historic Preservation Office.
